In a context marked by the proliferation of armed conflicts, the increase in military spending and the use of security narrative to justify them, fundamental issues for the sustainability of life, such as the climate emergency or the depletion of resources, have been pushed out of the public debate. The centrality of war and security redefines social and economic priorities, diverting resources and attention from collective needs towards logics of control, competition and confrontation. Furthermore, it accelerates the race for access to critical minerals such as rare earths, which are necessary for green and digital technologies, but also for military applications.
The Debt Observatory in Globalisation, the International Catalan Institute for Peace (ICIP) and the Barcelona Institute for International Studies (IBEI) are organising this dialogue on 23 October at 5 pm, at Hub Social, to discuss how the rise of militarism is displacing the green and digital transition and the implications this has for critical minerals extractivism, specifically rare earths. We will be joined by Lars-Marcus Lilja Kuhmunen, Gabna sami community chairman (Sweden), and Professor Julie Klinger from the University of Delaware, an expert on rare earths. The session will be moderated by journalist Núria Jar.
*The session will be in English with simultaneous interpretation to Catalan.
